Gloria Jean Whitaker Milton, was born on January 1, 1944, in Jacksonville, Texas, to the late Samuel David Whitaker and Mary Ann Arnwine Whitaker.
Gloria was raised in the Mt. Haven community, a place that remained near and dear to her heart throughout her life. She attended Mt. Haven Elementary Community School and later Fred Douglass High School, where she graduated. Following high school, Gloria continued her education at Sweatt’s Beauty College in Tyler, Texas, where she received her cosmetology license.
Gloria later met Leslie “Bill” Milton, and the two joined together in holy matrimony on December 5, 1988. No children were born to their union, but Gloria’s life was filled with the love of a large extended family whom she dearly cherished.
At an early age, Gloria became a member of Mt. Haven C.M.E. Church, where she remained a faithful member until her passing. Throughout the years, she faithfully served as a Stewardess and choir member. Singing was one of Gloria’s greatest joys, and she especially loved lifting her voice in gospel songs. Among her favorites to sing were “Too Close to the Mirror” and “Jesus Cares for Me.” Her love for gospel music was another reflection of the joy and faith she carried throughout her life.
Gloria was a woman who truly enjoyed life. She was not one to complain, and those who knew her will remember the smile she so often wore. She cherished her family, enjoyed being surrounded by those she loved, and possessed a gentle and pleasant spirit that made her presence special. And anyone who knew Gloria knew one thing for certain—wherever Gloria went, her purse was going with her! It was one of those little things about her that family and friends will always remember with a smile.
Gloria shared a special connection with the Mt. Haven community throughout her lifetime. At the time of her passing, she held the distinction of being the oldest living member of the Mt. Haven community, a blessing and milestone that reflected the many years of life God allowed her to see.
Gloria was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Leslie “Bill” Milton; her parents, Samuel David and Mary Ann Whitaker; three sisters; and eight brothers.
Gloria leaves to cherish her precious memories her nieces, Sherlyn Whitaker and Helen Ann Whitaker Scott (Willie); her sisters-in-law, Martha Whitaker of Tyler, Texas, and Sally Whitaker of Bryans Road, Maryland; along with a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, church family, other relatives, and dear friends.
Though her earthly voice has grown quiet, the songs she sang, the smile she shared, and the memories she created will continue to live in the hearts of those who knew and loved her. Gloria lived, she loved, she sang, and she enjoyed the life God blessed her to live. Her presence will be deeply missed, but her memory will forever be cherished.
